Red giant depletion in globular cluster cores

We investigate the observed depletion of red giants in the cores of post-core-collapse globular clusters. In particular, the evolutionary scenario we consider is a binary consisting of two lowmass stars which undergoes two common-envelope phases. The first common-envelope phase occurs when the primary is a red giant resulting in a helium white dwarf and main-sequence star in a detached binary. ...

We have serendipitously discovered an extremely lithium-rich star on the red giant branch of the globular cluster M3 (NGC 5272). An echelle spectrum obtained with the Keck I HIRES reveals a Li i λ6707 Å resonance doublet of 520 mÅ equivalent width, and our analysis places the star among the most Li-rich giants known: log ǫ(Li) ≃ +3.0. We determine the elemental abundances of this star, IV-101, ...

Proton-Capture Nucleosynthesis in Globular Cluster Red Giant Stars

Observational evidence suggests that many of the variations of the surface abundances of light to intermediate mass elements (A < 28) in globular cluster red-giant-branch (RGB) stars can be attributed to non-canonical mixing between the surface and the deep stellar interior during the RGB phase. As a first step to studying this mixing in more detail, we have combined a large nuclear reaction ne...

Lithium-rich Giants in Globular Clusters

Although red giants deplete lithium on their surfaces, some giants are Li-rich. Intermediate-mass asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars can generate Li through the Cameron–Fowler conveyor, but the existence of Li-rich, low-mass red giant branch (RGB) stars is puzzling. Globular clusters are the best sites to examine this phenomenon because it is straightforward to determine membership in the clus...

Bright Stars and Metallicity Spread in the Globular Cluster

The globular cluster Ω Centauri (NGC 5139) is the most massive and brightest cluster in our Galaxy. It has also a moderately high mass to light ratio (3.6) and an anomalous flattening (0.83) for a globular cluster. This cluster is also very interesting because it is one of a few examples of globular clusters with a measurable spread in the metal abundance (see Da Costa & Willumsen 1981, Norris ...
